The Dama Dama Dama Foundation expresses its strong disapproval of the recent statements made by the Deputy Mayor of Rhodes, Mr. Thomas Sotirillis, who proposed lifting the hunting ban on Dama dama deer in Rhodes. These statements are unacceptable and contradict the principles of biodiversity conservation and the island’s cultural heritage.

Dama dama deer are an integral part of Rhodes’ natural and cultural identity. Their protection is vital for maintaining the island’s ecological balance and tourist appeal. The proposal to hunt them endangers their survival and undermines decades-long conservation efforts.

Although the municipal authority has distanced itself from Mr. Sotirillis’s statements, characterizing deer protection as “a non-negotiable and self-evident responsibility,” we believe more decisive actions are needed to prevent such dangerous proposals in the future.

We call on the municipal authority of Rhodes to take immediate measures to strengthen Dama dama deer protection programs and ensure that such irresponsible proposals are not repeated. We also urge the citizens of Rhodes and the island’s visitors to actively support efforts to protect this unique species.
